Lowcountry Air…

“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air….”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

There is some thing about the Lowcountry air… this morning I got up , stepped outside and wow, it hit me…  the earthy, but sweet fragrance of the Spring air. I visited the Lowcountry many, many times for almost 30 years prior to moving here. Most of my travel was by air, not an unusual way for a gypsy to travel in today’s world! The moment I stepped outside the airport doors I  was hit by this amazing air, that made me feel like I was home. It doesn’t smell the same all the time, it varies as to the different seasons, and other factors like one’s proximity to the marshes, or the ocean, but there is always an underlying quality of freshness, allowing one to breath easier.

It looks like it will rain today and the air has a distinct herbal quality. The oaks and pines are sending out a lot of new growth. The early bloomers, like the azaleas are finishing up, while many of the other flowering shrubs and trees are just getting started. Time to get another cup of coffee and a sit a little more on the back deck. The birds are starting to sing again and the wind is picking up….the rain can’t be far behind!
